Summer Travel Tips & Essentials

Summer travel season is here, and whether you’re headed to the beach, mountains, or a weekend road trip, it’s important to pack more than just sunscreen and flip-flops. A little preparation can help you stay healthy and avoid unexpected interruptions while traveling. Here are some tips and essentials that I make sure to have on hand when I travel.

Laura’s Summer Travel Health Checklist:

1) Refill Prescriptions Early

One of the most common travel mistakes is waiting too long to refill medications. Before leaving town, make sure you have enough medication to last your entire trip — plus a few extra days in case of delays. Remember that sometimes, the pharmacy has to request refills from your doctor. Requesting early ensures that we have enough time

2) Stay Hydrated

Hot temperatures and increased outdoor activity can quickly lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water, especially if you are taking medications that may increase heat sensitivity or fluid loss.

Stop by for some of our LMNT hydration packets. We have LOTS of new flavors in stock, and these are easy to travel with.

3) Protect Your Skin

Sun exposure can cause more than just sunburn. Protect yourself from skin cancer and skin aging. Some medications may also increase sun sensitivity, making it easier to burn. Be sure to wear SPF daily and reapply often when outdoors.

We have some great spray, cream and stick options in stock.

4) Pack a Mini Wellness Kit

A few simple items on hand can save your trip. Here is what I make sure to pack for my family:

  • Pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) – Covers you from headaches or joint pain to fever
  • Allergy medication – New places can mean new allergens
  • Motion sickness remedies – My kids love the ginger chews that we stock at the pharmacy; Dramamine or meclizine can also be very handy.
  • Bandages – Always prepared!
  • Electrolyte packets – Our favorites are the LMNT hydration packets.
  • Hand sanitizer – Keep those germs away.
  • Insect repellent – Preventing insect bites can protect from more than just itchy bites. In some areas various insects are carriers for diseases.
  • Hydrocortisone cream – Great for the bites you get in spite of repellent.

5) Keep Medications Safe in the Heat

Many medications should not be stored in excessive heat. Avoid leaving prescriptions in a hot car, beach bag, or direct sunlight.

Travel smart this summer and let us help you prepare before your next adventure. Stop by the pharmacy if you need refill assistance, travel wellness recommendations, or over-the-counter essentials.
