Smart Sun Safety: Protect Your Skin, Protect Your Health
I am sure most of you know someone who has experienced skin cancer, or possibly you yourself have had a skin cancer. I had my first pre-melanoma when I was only 24 years old. Needless to say, I take protecting my skin very seriously. Here’s why you should, too!
Why Sun Protection Matters
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer—the most common cancer in the United States. UV rays can also lead to premature aging, sunburns, and eye damage.
While spending time outdoors is beneficial for physical and mental well-being, it’s crucial to do so safely.
Understanding Skin Cancer
There are several types of skin cancer, and they vary in appearance, severity, and how quickly they spread:
- Basal cell carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, often appearing as a pearly bump or pink patch. It grows slowly and rarely spreads but can cause disfigurement if untreated.
- Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): Usually presents as a red, scaly patch or sore that doesn’t heal. It can grow deeper into the skin and sometimes spread.
- Melanoma: The most dangerous form. It may look like a new mole or a change in an existing mole, especially if it’s asymmetrical, has irregular borders, or changes color. Melanoma can spread quickly and requires prompt treatment.
Early detection is key—regular skin checks and attention to any new or changing spots on your skin can save your life. However, prevention is even better than early detection!
Sunscreen: Your First Line of Defense
One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your skin is by using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Here’s how to use it correctly:
- Apply generously: Use about one ounce to cover your entire body.
- Don’t forget key spots: Ears, neck, tops of feet, and backs of hands often get missed.
- Reapply often: Every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.
- Use even on cloudy days: Up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds.
Additional Sun Safety Tips
Sunscreen is vital, but it’s just part of a broader sun protection strategy:
- Seek shade: Especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
- Wear protective clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats offer excellent protection.
- Use sunglasses: Look for a pair that blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
- Check the UV Index: Higher numbers mean greater risk. Plan outdoor activities accordingly.
Sun Safety for All Ages
Sun protection is important for everyone, but especially for children, who tend to spend more time outdoors and have more sensitive skin. Apply sunscreen regularly to children over 6 months, and dress them in protective clothing and hats. For babies under 6 months, keep them in the shade and out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
Be Sun Smart Every Season
Sun safety isn’t just for summer. UV rays can harm your skin year-round, even during winter or on overcast days. Whether you’re hiking snowy trails or lounging poolside, take steps to protect your skin.
Bottom Line: Taking sun safety seriously today can prevent serious health problems tomorrow. Make sunscreen and sun protection part of your daily routine, and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Your skin is with you for life—treat it with care.
