Feel Like Yourself Again: Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause

You don’t have to simply power through the symptoms of midlife, even if you have been told “this is normal”. Understanding what is changing in your body can be the first step toward feeling better. Feeling this way DOESN’T have to be your new normal.

Have you been feeling more tired than usual? Struggling with brain fog, stubborn weight gain, poor sleep, or mood changes that seem to come out of nowhere? Maybe you just don’t feel like yourself anymore, but you can’t put your finger on exactly why.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

Let’s talk about how a more personalized approach to your health can help you navigate this season of life with greater confidence and feel like yourself again.

Perimenopause: The Changes Before Menopause

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. It can begin several years before your final menstrual period, often during your 40s, although the timing varies from woman to woman.

During this transition, progesterone levels drop, and estrogens and other hormones change in sometimes unpredictable ways. These fluctuations can affect so much more than your menstrual cycle.

You might experience:

Energy changes: Persistent fatigue or feeling like you never quite recharge.

Brain fog: Difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or trouble finding the right words.

Sleep disturbances: Trouble falling asleep, waking during the night, or waking up feeling exhausted.

Mood changes: Increased irritability, anxiety, emotional ups and downs, or feeling unlike yourself.

Changes in body composition: Weight gain, particularly around the middle, or finding that the strategies that once worked no longer seem effective. This one can be extremely frustrating!

Hot flashes and night sweats: Sudden waves of heat or nighttime sweating that disrupt your comfort and sleep.

Changes in sexual health: Vaginal dryness, discomfort with intimacy, or decrease in sexual desire.

Aches and pains: Joint and muscle discomfort that may develop or become more noticeable during midlife.

Not every woman experiences all these symptoms, and symptoms can overlap with other health conditions. That’s why looking at the bigger picture matters.

Menopause Is More Than the End of Your Period

Menopause is official after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period when there is no other cause for the change. The transition can affect women differently. Many of the symptoms listed above for perimenopause are present or worse after menopause.

Hormonal changes may influence sleep, bone health, sexual health, and other aspects of long-term well-being. This is an important time to reassess your health, address bothersome symptoms, and develop a plan that supports you now and in the years ahead.

Your Body Is Unique. Your Health Care Should Be, Too.

At Hale Center Clinical Pharmacy, we believe women deserve personalized attention during these important stages of life. Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we can work together to explore your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and potential contributing factors. Here is what this might look like:

Step One: Look Beyond the Symptoms to Dig Deeper

Fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, and mood concerns can have several possible causes. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, laboratory testing may help evaluate factors such as hormone levels, cortisol levels, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and vitamin/nutrient status.

The goal is not simply to collect lab results. It is to use the appropriate information to help guide personalized, meaningful next steps.

Step Two: Explore Personalized Hormone Support

When hormonal changes are contributing to bothersome symptoms, we need to discuss hormone therapy, though this isn’t the right fit for everyone. I work with your physician to get personalized dosing based on your labs and your symptoms.

Step Three: Supplement Recommendations With a Purpose

Supplements can sometimes help address specific nutritional needs or support particular health and hormone goals, but not every popular supplement is right for every woman.

Based on your needs, we can discuss whether targeted supplementation may be appropriate, taking into account your diet, medications, health conditions, and lab findings. Rather than guessing or purchasing an overwhelming collection of products, the goal is to identify options that make sense for you.

Step Four: Support the Whole Person

Hormones are only one part of the picture. Nutrition, exercise, daily movement, sleep quality, stress management, and metabolic health all contribute to how you feel during midlife.

Small, sustainable changes can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can identify practical strategies that fit your life and support your long-term health, not just your immediate symptoms.

Are you ready to jump in?

If you have been telling yourself that you are just tired, that your weight is simply harder to manage now, or that you should be able to power through the brain fog and mood changes, I encourage you to take a closer look.

You deserve to understand what is happening in your body. You deserve to have your concerns heard. And you deserve a plan built around your individual needs.
