Gut Health Through the Holidays

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have some wonderful time with family and friends this week. May your hearts and stomachs be full! But on that note, let’s talk a little bit about gut health.

As we get into the holidays, it can be very hard to eat a balanced diet. Holiday meals, travel, and schedule disruptions can also challenge the digestive system. Gut health is vital, not only to our digestive system, but also our immune system and overall well-being. A few targeted habits can support your gut microbiome, protect your gut lining, and help stabilize blood sugar so you move through the season with better energy, less bloating, and fewer GI flare-ups.

1. Prioritize Blood Sugar Consistency

Large swings in glucose can trigger fatigue, cravings, and digestive discomfort. Simple changes help keep your levels stable even during heavier meals:

  • Start with protein and fiber. Eating these first slows glucose absorption and smooths the rise after eating.
  • Pair carbohydrates with fat or protein. This improves satiety and reduces spiking.
  • Use movement strategically. A 10–15 minute walk after meals enhances glucose disposal and reduces post-meal sluggishness.
  • Hydrate. Dehydration increases perceived hunger and worsens glycemic variability.

So you can have your dessert! Just try not to overindulge and make sure to pair it with protein.

2. Support Your Microbiome With Probiotics

A balanced gut microbiome contributes to smoother digestion, immune resilience, and better metabolic control—all critical during high-stress, high-sugar holiday weeks.

  • Daily probiotic supplementation can help maintain microbial diversity despite dietary shifts.
  • Include fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, or kombucha when possible.
  • Feed the bacteria you’re supporting. Prebiotic fibers (bananas, oats, onions, garlic, asparagus) promote growth of beneficial strains.

My two favorite all around probiotics are: OrthoBiotic or RestorFlora. One daily of either of these will support a healthy microbiome mix in your gut.

3. Protect and Strengthen the Gut Lining

Overeating, alcohol, stress, and high sugar intake can compromise the intestinal barrier. Maintaining gut lining integrity reduces bloating and keeps inflammation in check.

  • Aim for steady meals. Long fasting periods followed by heavy meals can irritate the gut and worsen permeability.
  • Increase polyphenols and antioxidants. Berries, green tea, olive oil, and colorful vegetables counteract oxidative stress.
  • Consider supportive nutrients. L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, collagen, and omega-3s are commonly used to reinforce epithelial health.
  • Limit irritants when possible. Excess alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and large sugar loads are common culprits.

Gut health doesn’t require a perfect holiday season—just consistent inputs. These actions collectively stabilize blood sugar, maintain microbial balance, and protect gut integrity.
